Help & troubleshooting

The quick fixes for the things people run into most. Setting up for the first time? Start with the getting started guide.

My video capture looks blurry

The camera should come pre-focused for the tray, but if it looks blurry, set a die in the middle of the tray and go to the 2x or 3x zoom in the Calibrate screen. You can refocus by gently and slowly turning the lens of the camera itself.

Windows says “Windows protected your PC”

Click More info, then Run anyway. Our installer is signed, but not yet with a certificate Microsoft SmartScreen recognises, so Windows is being cautious. If you’d like to be sure the file is genuine, check its fingerprint.

Rollcaster isn’t reading my dice yet

On a brand-new install, Rollcaster first downloads its dice-reading models — a banner shows while that’s happening. Make sure the computer is online and give it a few minutes; rolls start being read as soon as the models arrive.

My camera isn’t in the list, or shows nothing

Plug the rig’s cable straight into the computer (not through a dock or monitor hub) and press ↻ next to the camera list to rescan. Close any other app that might be using the camera, such as a video-call app.

Mac: open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and turn Rollcaster on.
Linux: run sudo usermod -aG video $USER, then log out and back in.

A die keeps asking to be confirmed

That means Rollcaster isn’t sure — and it’s right to ask. Check the ring light is on at full brightness and facing straight down, and that the lens is clean (see sharper reads). For unusual dice, look for a matching dice pack or teach Rollcaster your dice. On a home-made setup rather than the rig, some of this is expected — see using your own camera.

“Rollcaster Eye is already running” (or the other way round)

Rollcaster and Rollcaster Eye can’t run at the same time on one computer. Close the one that’s open — check the system tray or menu bar — then open the other. The same goes for two different versions after an update.

Is my camera feed shared with anyone?

No. Your camera picture stays on your computer. The only exception is optional, and off until you turn it on: with Share photos and video clips of my rolls ticked, a three-second view of the tray goes to the people in your shared session with each roll, and close-ups of the dice go with any Discord post of your roll. See our privacy policy for the details.

I can’t join a shared session

“That invite isn’t valid” usually means part of it was lost in copying. Ask the host to press Copy next to the Invite and send it again, then paste the whole thing into Join with an invite on the Play screen and press Join.

If it still won’t join, check you’re online, and ask the host to create a fresh session and send that invite. Everyone in a session can use either Rollcaster or Rollcaster Eye.

My rolls aren’t showing up in Discord

Open the Discord card on the Play screen. It should say Connected to Discord; press Send test post and check the channel.

  • “Discord no longer accepts this webhook”: it was deleted or changed in Discord. Make a new one (Where do I get this? on the card walks through it) and connect again.
  • In a shared session, one person posts everyone’s rolls, and the card says who. If it says No one in this session is posting to Discord, whoever runs the Discord server needs to connect it on their own Rollcaster.
  • Only rolls made on the Play screen are posted, not the ones made while calibrating or teaching Rollcaster your dice.
  • No pictures? Pictures go along only when the roller has ticked Share photos and video clips of my rolls, and only with their own posts.
Does it work with Discord, Foundry VTT or Roll20?

Discord: yes. Paste a channel webhook into the Discord card on the Play screen and your rolls are posted to that channel (see the guide).

Foundry VTT: a module is in testing; get in touch if you’d like to try it. Roll20: not yet. The webhook output can feed a bot or tool of your own in the meantime.

How do I update to a new version?

Download the new version from downloads.rollcaster.net and install it over the old one: your settings and dice sets are kept. On Windows the installer removes the old version first; if it asks, leave Delete the application data unticked. New versions are announced on our news page.

Something else is wrong

Email us at admin@rollcaster.net. Tell us which version of Rollcaster you installed (it’s the number in the installer’s file name, such as 0.4.3), your computer (Windows, macOS or Linux), and what happened. A screenshot helps.
